SCHOOL SAFETY AT DEER PARK GRADE SCHOOL

With the start of a new school year, the Deer Park Grade School Board of Education has approved changes to the school safety plan for making our school a safe and orderly place for our students.  The School Safety Committee met on June 26 and with the help and advice from the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department, submitted twelve recommendations to the Deer Park Grade School Board of Education.  The Board of Education acted on those recommendations at their July 16, 2018 meeting.  Listed below are some of the changes approved to the Deer Park Grade School Safety Plan-

  • All  exterior doors at the school will remained secure and locked during the school day.  All visitors, including parents, who wish to enter the school, must request entrance by “buzzing” in to the office.

  • At the start of the school day, students will enter the front school doors at 8:10 am.   Any student who is dropped off prior to 8:10 am will sit in the office until the 8:10 am bell rings.  Parents who are dropping off their children may not enter the school building unless they have a prior scheduled appointment with a school employee.

  • On special occasions, such as the first day of school, or for special school functions, parents will be allowed to enter the school with their child.

  • All visitors who are approved by the office to enter the school building must submit their driver’s license before they are given a visitors’ badge.

  • At the end of the school day, all bus riders will be dismissed five minutes prior to the end of the school day. Busses will depart the parking lot prior to the end of the official dismissal time.  All students who are being picked up by parents will be dismissed at the bell that ends the school day.  Parents picking up children may not enter the school unless they have a prior scheduled appointment with a school employee. After the busses depart, parents are encouraged to pull their vehicles up to the front door in an orderly line for pickup of students.

  • The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department will provide the faculty and staff with intruder and/or active shooter incident training. This training will take place on a day and time when students are not in attendance.

  • The Deer Park administration and staff will train our students in safety procedures including how to react when a stranger is in the building without a visitors’ badge and how to react when a lock down is announced due to an intruder in the school building

  • The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department will provide anti-bully and harassment education programs to our students.

  • As part of School Board Policy 8:30, decals will be displayed on exterior doors that communicate that the Conceal and Carry of Weapons is prohibited at Deer Park Grade School.

We hope that parents will support these changes, so we can make Deer Park Grade School a safe place for our students and staff.  We cannot take the position that

“it will never happen at our school.”   Please help us keep your child and our children safe.

                Sincerely

                Michael Struna
